On the occasion, the Undersecretary of Social Welfare, Claudio Reyes, highlighted that “This policy is very good news, and is the result of a broad, participatory and tripartite process, which establishes well-defined rights, responsibilities and duties, giving top priority to the principle of 'Prevention', also underlining the commitment of the Government of Chile with the creation of work environments that protect both the physical and mental integrity of workers.

Undersecretary Reyes, who especially thanked the technical committee and all those involved in the Higher Labor Council and the ILO, explained that the new legal framework enshrines the respect for the life and physical and psychosocial integrity of workers as a fundamental right. Improvements include reforming the system for rating the origin of occupational diseases, separating accident evaluation functions to minimize conflicts of interest and increase confidence in coverage decisions.

While the director of the ILO Office for the Southern Cone of Latin America, Fabio Bertranou, highlighted the importance of social dialogue as a tool to build a more inclusive world of work. “At the ILO we particularly highlight the key role that social dialogue plays in these processes, which makes it possible to give sustainability to the agreements reached and build solid labor relations.”

For its part, Carmen Bueno, specialist in Occupational Safety and Health at the ILO Southern Cone, presented the organization's guidelines in the formulation of national Occupational Safety and Health programs and some international experiences on the subject.

It was highlighted that in the next 6 months the next stage will be to develop a National Program that implements the policy. With this objective, we are working on approving the methodology for its preparation.
